Violin, Viola & Piano

Profession:

Teacher and Musician

Qualifications:

BMus, Wesley Institute

About:

Elizabeth first started teaching as a music tutor when she was 15 years old and quickly developed a passion for sharing music in this way. Throughout high school and early adult years, she continued with studies in voice, violin, piano and theory, before pursuing them at tertiary level. Elizabeth is passionate about helping students meet their goals and strives to tailor each lesson to suit an individual’s level and learning style. Lessons focus on allowing a student to grow in their technical ability on their chosen instrument while igniting self belief and passion for their potential. This encourages a healthy and positive attitude toward practice and performance and allows a student to explore who they are (and could be) in the world of music. Elizabeth actively works to improve her own understanding of teaching by reading widely and attending teaching master classes and workshops where possible. Having just completed a Bmus (voice), Elizabeth is now continuing with postgraduate studies aimed to improve her understanding of teaching and the voice.

Anecdotes:

What was the very first concert you saw? Did you enjoy it and if you had the choice would you go again?
“My first concert that I remember, (excluding local community events) was when I was in primary school, going to see ‘the Seekers’. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially as the experience was so new. It was pre-internet days and my Mum was so excited that the group was coming to our regional area that we waited for hours with her to buy the tickets. We got 4 of the last 8 seats before it sold out! The concert itself was performed really well, I still remember how cool it was to see relevant stage lighting (e.g. Red circles in the backdrop on the song ‘Red Rubber Ball’). They also did an encore – which was new to me too as I didn’t know you could make a performer come back out! Due to my parents, my early years of listening had been a mix of ‘Simon and Garfunkel’, ‘the Beatles’, ‘the BeeGees’ and ‘the Seekers’, making this a truly memorable experience.”

Anecdotes:

If you could have written one song that someone else wrote, what song would it be? Tell us why…
“Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin: besides the duration of the song, it retains many heavy elements of rock n roll that are uniquely combined amongst, arguably, the most contemporary insturments: drums, guitar, bass and vocals. It is an epic based off an epic that is both higly emotional and supremely technical to play on any layering of the song. It is fast, dramatic and exciting but within its simplicity, it is masterly crafted by Jimmy Pages orchestration. It’s almost like a story within a story and is based off the story of Achilles, the greek hero of the trojan war. It is a fantastic epic and combines both traditional lore with the modernised sounds of the future.”

Anecdotes:

Do you have a favourite song/songs to belt out in the car?
“Death by Demon Hunter.”

If you could play with any musician (or band), past/present/dead/alive, who it would be? Tell us why…
“Ooh that’s tough. All the bands I like have better drummers than me. I’m just going to say my band, Oberon.”

What was the first instrument you ever picked up? Tell us about it…
“Depends how you define instrument really. Before I could walk I used to have a bucket that I would hold between my knees and hit with a pair of textas, but aside from that it was probably an old keyboard that my Dad owned. I seem to remember that the D above Middle C had a coffee stain or something on it and didn’t work. Or was it the E above Middle C?”

Can you give us a rundown of your favourite guitar and gadgets?
“My number one has always been my Fender Stratocaster. I’ve rewired it more than four times and every time it sounds great. Through thick and thin, it has survived equipment falling onto it. It comes with me to nearly every gig, if not as the main guitar, as the backup. The main gadget would have to be my overdrive pedal named the ‘Tube Zone’. Now discontinued, it always wipes my other overdrives off the board!”
