About:

A violin student since age five, Rosy Timms continued to take lessons and perform throughout primary and high school. Following that, she completed a Bachelor of Classical Performance in 2011 at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide, Australia. Rosy completed a semester of the Honours program before travelling to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music until mid 2015.

Some performance highlights include Nicola Benedetti’s Masterclass at the Elder Conservatorium; Performing in the Berklee World Strings ensemble with A.R. Rahman for his tribute concert at Symphony Hall in Boston; and providing violin on the Grammy award winning Hip-Hop artist Lupe Fiasco album Tetsuo & Youth.

“Not a song – but I would pick the third movement (Passacaglia: Andante) of the Shostakovich Violin Concerto in A minor, because it’s so sad and so beautiful.”

Chris Haigh has always had a strong passion for performing, writing and teaching music. Chris began playing trumpet at 7 years old and later at the age of 14 discovered a strong passion for playing the drum kit. Chris developed a high level of competency in a range musical genres throughout his professional career.

He has performed at many well-known Sydney venues and has had experience teaching drums, trumpet and musicianship lessons to students for 7 years. If you could have dinner with any musician past or present who would it be and why?
“Michael Jackson. I would love to try and understand the mysterious ways of the one and only King of Pop. It would be a treasured moment for me to be able to sit with Michael and hear his stories, ideas and quirks without the influence of the media. In my opinion, it was impossible for Michael not to be famous. He was an artist that embraced and embodied such unconventional uniqueness of which he boldly introduced to the world. I would have an endless list of questions that I would ask if I wasn’t too star struck!” 

Who was your biggest music influence and why?
“Nile Rogers from Chic. From an early age my parents exposed me to plenty of his 70’s-80’s disco hits and the characteristics of disco music became strongly engrained in me. Until now I realise that many of my performances and compositions adopt elements of the genre. Nile rogers, although the front man of Chic also created many “feel good” hits for the likes of KC and the Sunshine, Dianna Ross and INXS. His funky guitar lines, rock solid rhythm section and punchy horns are all accountable for his unique sound.”

What is your earliest music related memory?
“My parents were playing a cassette tape featuring Liberace on the drive up to my grandparents’ house. I can remember appreciating his playing and questioning my mother as to why he was so much better than her at playing the piano. Hopefully she wasn’t too offended… come on, it’s Liberace!”

Alison is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Music and holds a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre. I started playing at age 12 and by 14 I was playing school dances with friends. By 16 I was playing in a jazz rock band that won the Come Out Youth Festival band competition in Adelaide. Over the following years I studied jazz and classical percussion and played in more bands than I can remember. I was one of the students studying at Adelaide Uni in the first year of the Jazz Course there. I never completed that as I became so busy playing in several of the most popular bands in Adelaide at that time as well as backing many of the top artists from the eastern states on tour. I’ve always loved teaching people to play the drums and I found that I have a real talent for helping students to understand music and reach their goals, which gives me great satisfaction.

“I had a series of choir rehearsals and two concert performances on the days before my piano jury exam. I attended these rehearsals and performances instead of locking myself in the practice rooms. It was very helpful because I kept on thinking about the choir performances instead of the piano jury exam. When it came to my jury exam day, I was stress-free! I went into the exam room with confidence and passed it with a high.”

What was the standout in my music career?
“Accomplishing and learning a multi-melodic composition (Fugue) on my own using all the knowledge that was passed on from my own piano teacher”

What were my earliest memories of music?
“My earliest memories of music was listening to the songs produced from the Walt Disney cartoon films only to realise many years later I still love to listen to them and work out how those fantastic harmonies work.”

“Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin: besides the duration of the song, it retains many heavy elements of rock n roll that are uniquely combined amongst, arguably, the most contemporary insturments: drums, guitar, bass and vocals. It is an epic based off an epic that is both higly emotional and supremely technical to play on any layering of the song. It is fast, dramatic and exciting but within its simplicity, it is masterly crafted by Jimmy Pages orchestration. It’s almost like a story within a story and is based off the story of Achilles, the greek hero of the trojan war. It is a fantastic epic and combines both traditional lore with the modernised sounds of the future.”

Can you give us a rundown of your favourite guitar and gadgets?
“My number one has always been my Fender Stratocaster. I’ve rewired it more than four times and every time it sounds great. Through thick and thin, it has survived equipment falling onto it. It comes with me to nearly every gig, if not as the main guitar, as the backup. The main gadget would have to be my overdrive pedal named the ‘Tube Zone’. Now discontinued, it always wipes my other overdrives off the board!”

Starting his musical journey with piano lessons at the age of 6, Michaels passion for music continues to grow every day. With over 18 years piano experience, he has a comprehensive understanding of all music genres from early Baroque, all the way through to contemporary pop and jazz. Michael has played in multiple ensembles from rock, electronic, pop, jazz, progressive to classical. She also studied Music 2 and Music Extension for her HSC in 2010, majoring in composition and performance. Tara has proficient knowledge in the accompanying theory necessary for Piano, having passed all theory exams with honours. She teaches beginners to intermediate piano. Tara also teaches beginners flute, having played the flute for six years as a member of the Hornsby Girls High School flute ensemble. Tara is an energetic and fun teacher with a passion for sharing her knowledge of music with her students. She believes that music is a greatly valued and important skill that can have only a positive effect on your life no matter what level you are at. She works with each student differently, tailoring their lessons to suit their individual style of learning and overall goals.
